Pre-K Screenings
As part of our pre-kindergarten program, we are required to provide developmental screenings in the fall and in the spring of the school year. Spring screenings will occur at various times during the month of May in all pre-k classes. Parents will receive letters home with their child's screening results. If you have any questions about the screening process, please contact your child's teacher or the Early Childhood Office at 361-5903.

MECS Pre-K classes are celebrating Spring with an family activity night on May 3rd from 6-7:00 PM. Pre-K families will have the opportunity to participate in several Spring related centers. Several Pre-K academic as well as social skills will be practiced at this event.

Miss Awad's Preschool class is inviting parents to their classroom's ice cream sundae shop on May 15 at 1:00 PM. Parents will help themselves and their child make sundaes with all the toppings. Many sensory issues will be addresse

The Pre-K and Preschool classes are inviting mothers in for muffins on May 11 at 9:00 AM. Children and adults will be making and enjoying breakfast muffins while focusing on many ELA and literacy skills. This activity is based on the popular children's book "If You Give A Moose A Muffin."

Oneida Nursery Rhyme Night
Students, families and staff members from all three Oneida Pre-K classes gathered at Willard Prior Elementary School to enjoy a night of Nursery Rhymes. Families were able to enjoy activities ranging from making Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star necklaces to Itsy-bitsy spider snacks. Children helped Little Boy Blue find the cows that were lost in the corn and got to put fleece on Mary's Little Lamb along with several other Nursery Rhyme related activities. The Canastota Pre-K is hosting a Nursery Rhyme Activity Night for the students and their parents on Monday, May 7th. There will be fun stations focusing on gross-motor, fine-motor, ELA, and math skills. It will be held at the Peterboro Street Elementary School from 6-7 pm.

The Canastota Pre-K will be holding an End of Year Celebration for the students on Monday, June 18th. Parents will be invited to join the class for a few songs and a snack as we commemorate a successful year of Pre-K. The morning class will hold their celebration at 10:30 am and the afternoon class will hold theirs at 2:00 pm.

Oneida Pre-K April Family Activity
Students, families and staff members from the Oneida Pre-K program are invited to a night of nursery rhyme fun on April 18th at the Willard Prior Elementary School at 6 PM. This year's event marks the 12th annual Nursery Rhyme Celebration. Families will be able to enjoy activities ranging from making Jack Be Nimble's Candlestick to Itsy-Bitsy Spider snacks. Rhyming, sequencing, positional concepts, fine and gross motor, self-confidence and oral and written language skills will be practiced at this fun, hands on activity. A special appearance by the Madison County Dairy Princess is anticipated and children are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite nursery rhyme character. Eileen Allen 361-5882

McConnellsville Parent-Child Activity
Parents from Miss Awad's preschool class joined their children in the culminating activity to the unit of community helpers. On March 29 students and adults participated in activities that focused on farms, farmers and farm animals. Farm toys, games and puzzles were just a few of the activities provided for this family activity. Fine motor skills were practiced as children assembled rooster puppets, stamped farm scenes, strung animal bead necklaces, glued fleece onto sheep. Other skills were also practiced as students searched in shelled corn then sorted sheep and cows, assembled sequential puzzles and listened to stories. The activity ended with music and singing. SVCS Family Activity Night
The evening of March 21st found SVCS Early Childhood Program parents learning, then staying to play with their children. Come and Learn, Stay and Play was an activity night designed to educate Preschool and Pre-K parents on the Strong Start curriculum being used in the program to address the healthy social and emotional development of young children. Pre-K teachers,Jen Didio and Leslie Zebrowski, facilitated the parent workshop in which they shared many resources, books, activities and background of this developmental area with parents while other staff members and helpers supervised children in the cafeteria. Board games, toys, and face-painting were some of the activities that encouraged positive social skills for children. Oneida Pre-K loves Milk and Cookies! Milk and Cookies (A.K.A. Donna Butterfield and Sharon Allen) brought their musical talents to the children at Willard Prior Pre-K on March 20. Children and staff were entertained with songs, stories, dancing and fun as Milk and Cookies combined music and literature. Classical songs like THE WHEELS ON THE BUS and THE ABCs were shared. The children's stories PETE THE CAT-I LOVE MY WHITE SHOES and PETE THE CAT-ROCKS IN MY SCHOOL SHOES were put to music while children participated with clapping and dancing. Eileen Allen 361-5882

Several parents from the SVCS and Oneida Early Childhood Programs participated in a 2-night workshop with Eileen Allen, Assistant for Family Services in February. The workshop focused on effective discipline and positive parenting. Eileen led the parents in discussions about stress, communication, respect, family life styles, responsibility/accountability, appropriate expectations, and overall child development. Parts of the DVD "1,2,3.. Magic" were shared and the strategies of this effective discipline technique were reviewed. "Thanks so much for introducing us to this method. It really works! The Morrisville Pre-K class planned the morning of February 17th for activities that culminated their learning unit on Animals In Winter. Pre-K parents were invited in to participate in fun and learning that focused on what animals need to survive. Children and adults played matching games, counted animals, made bird feeders, practiced positional concepts and wrote books about animals. Parents were given information on local animal shelters and animal adoption programs as well as information on children and pets. Eileen Allen 361-5882
