Culinary Arts

Culinary Arts prepares students for careers in multiple aspects of the food and hospitality industry. Students have the opportunity to specialize in baking, commercial food preparation or front-end service and work in a fully-equipped commercial-style kitchen to practice their skills. Seniors will have the opportunity to complete an internship at a local restaurant, bakery, hotel or food service facility as preparation for college or employment.

 

Students in this program are assigned to one of two classroom locations: main Verona campus or MVCC’s Rome campus. Transportation is available.

 

What Students Learn 

The Culinary Arts program helps students develop a comprehensive understanding of the field through the study of:

  • Food Service Equipment
  • Introduction to Baking
  • Stocks, Soups and Sauces
  • Healthy Menus
  • Meat, Poultry and Seafood
  • Desserts and Baked Goods
  • Breakfast Cookery
  • Fine Dining
  • Safety and Sanitation
  • Food Service Math
  • Restaurant and Banquet Operations
  • Catering

How Students Learn

Students gain hands-on learning experiences and industry skills through:

  • Classroom instruction
  • Lab days in a working commercial-style kitchen
  • Catering on-campus events
  • Community internships

 

Students must wear appropriate non-skid, closed-toe footwear and industry approved pants to class, and they will use provided chef coats and hats in the kitchen lab.

  • Cruise and Resort Industry
  • Theme Parks

 

Course Credits

Upon completion of this two-year program, students will earn a total of 7.5 integrated high school credits:

  • 3 Units of CTE
  • 1 Unit each of English 12, Math 11, and Science 11
  • 1 Unit of Government & Economics
  • .5 Unit of Career & Financial Management
