Vocational Technical Prep

Vocational Technical Prep (VTP) is a 2-3 year program for students with disabilities. The course provides a smaller learning environment and slower-paced curriculum that emphasizes workplace expectations, career readiness, citizenship, civics and social skills. 

Students have the option of focusing on one of two CTE-related pathways of study (Hospitality or Trade and Technical) that nurtures their current interests and strengths. The program helps students find further success in school and beyond.

 

Placement in this program requires a recommendation from the student’s home district Committee on Special Education (CSE). The class meets on the main Verona campus. 

What Students Learn – Year 1 

The first year of the VTP program will introduce students to career development with observation opportunities within the hospitality/human services and technical/ trade fields. Students will develop pre-employment skills, basic Career and Technical Education skills, social skills, citizenship and community awareness.

What Students Learn – Year 2 

In the second year, classroom instruction continues to focus on building independence and employment readiness skills for success in school, the workplace and the community. Upon completion of VTP, students will have a strong understanding of workplace expectations.

  • Conflict Resolution
  • Communication Skills
  • Independent Living
  • Work Ethic
  • Resume/Interviews
  • Maintaining Employment

How Students Learn

Students gain hands-on learning experiences and industry skills through:

  • Classroom instruction
  • Operation of a school store, The Snack Shack, including sales, inventory, staffing and marketing
  • Work-based learning opportunities, including field trips, site tours and job shadowing

 

Course Credits

Students enrolled in VTP can earn 3 Units of CTE credit each year, as well as work-based learning hours required for the CDOS credential.
