SBI Showcase Highlights Student Programs
Posted on 03/22/2024

MOBOCES hosted school district leaders from three counties during the Oneida-Madison-Herkimer School Boards Institute’s annual Student and Community Showcase.

This year’s event provided the region’s school board members and district administrators with an opportunity to sample the creative initiatives underway at MOBOCES and its component schools to help prepare students for academic and career success.

“This gives board members an opportunity to see other BOCES and see what programs they have, and sometimes they replicate them in their own regions,” SBI Coordinator Jim Van Wormer said.

The SBI Showcase began in 2017 and came to MOBOCES in 2018. After taking a pause during the pandemic, the initiative resumed again last year.

Following the showcase, participants enjoyed a buffet dinner and dessert prepared by our Culinary Arts students.

MOBOCES had table displays for its SkillsUSA team, National Technical Honor Society, elementary literacy, middle school partnership with the Center for Family Life and Recovery, and adult training programs for nursing and skilled trades. Participants could also visit the CTE Carpentry classroom to see the scale model houses that high school juniors designed and built.

Component districts highlighted the following programs:

  • Canastota – Micro-credentialing initiative for students
  • Hamilton – Project-based learning class for 6th graders focused on community service
  • Madison – Three and Me early learning program for families
  • Morrisville-Eaton – Partnership with MACNY to introduce high school students to career opportunities in advanced manufacturing, supported through a service of the MOBOCES Staff and Curriculum Development
  • Oneida – Road to Code, a districtwide project to develop a local K-8 curriculum in robotics, coding and digital literacy
  • Rome – Connected Community Schools partnership
  • Stockbridge Valley – STEAM Ahead in the Valley, an interactive community-based event focused on STEAM exploration, featuring stations designed by students and staff
  • VVS – Competitive drone soccer team and an initiative that allows elementary students to create video morning announcements
